Go Deep Project is a European Project, to develop a new methodology to support leadership and facilitation with groups of young people. This methodology is a deepening and a synthesis of 2 existing methodologies: The Oasis Game and Processwork. We created exciting, useful and fun ways to help youth workers and young people to learn together and to develop the skills they need to engage and transform communities.
What is Go Deep?
Villages, towns, cities, neighbourhoods are complex, it takes time, energy and the help of a guide to explore all the parts. We don’t need to know how to operate a metro train in order to get around, but we have a better time when we can be open to who and what we meet on the journey.
Go Deep is a game that is played by any group that is interested in the future of a community. It is a like a journey, where groups of people travel through the cards along imaginary metro lines to deepen their leadership and facilitation skills and create actions and community transformations for everyone.
Go Deep has the following effects;
• Brings awareness about the diversity inside the participant and in the community, welcoming different ways to meet all the different parts inside the person and others
• Leads to new ways of thinking, doing, behaving, expressing feelings and offers new patterns of relationship.
• Raises awareness of what is needed to transform individuals, groups and communities and how to help that to happen and sustain the change.
• Bring fresh ways to work with deep community issues through the game.
• Supports the community to enjoy and promote its own growth and empowerment,
• Promote the agency and independence of the individuals and community to achieve their own needs through healthy relationships.
Go Deep Together in Diversity
Elos has been part of a European collaboration with our co-founding partners organizations under the name GoToDivers. This is a project developed for and supported by the European Commission under the Justice Programme & Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme. It implies the implementation of the newly developed and awarded Go Deep Game to use the power of game as a language to unite citizens with multicultural and multilingual background, or where minority groups are particularly excluded or subject to discrimination. The game has already been piloted in several communities in different regions in EU with previous support under the Erasmus+ program.
The priority of the call is diversity in Europe, a core element of Go Deep.
The process-oriented community tool gathers diverse groups of people on community level in 3 different regions of Europe, hosted by social professionals and citizens that receive a capacity building training beforehand. Although more regions could be included, at this moment the priority is to apply it to these 3 regions. This expansion can be made in a future stage thanks to the dissemination and networks, for instance to Eastern Europe (in the dissemination strategy, we will care especially how to do it as a plan to future partnerships and applications of the game).
Through the use of game we surpass language-barriers and use joint action as a provocation to connect more profoundly and to open up to the richness of diversity, increasing understand in each other’s culture and identity.
Through community action (core-elements of the game), the target group experiences an environment of equality (gender equality, equity considering other factors such as socioeconomic, etc.) and connection with their own possibilities and richness of diversity. Joint action creates a new relationship, balancing the understanding of each others’ value, giving minorities a stronger position in a majority contexts and more confidence and understanding to exercise their rights, therewith gaining strength to individually and collectively combat racism, xenophobia, homophobia and other forms of intolerance.
One central contribution is to demonstrate how we gain through diversity on a community-level and that collective actions involving intergroup collaborations can achieve sustainable change in the quality and number of relationship between individual from different groups and within groups themselves. The project will not only train professionals to replicate the Go Deep game and share intensively stories of change, but will also give a researched guideline of a process that can support many Europeans on how to work better with diversity.
In 2018 the Go Deep Partnership worked in communities where a diversity of local people, migrants, refugees and many others came together to build a future. Guided by the Go Deep Game, week long community programmes and events took place in Athens, Madrid, Edinburgh and Grottaglie. People met and engaged in different ways to design local community projects that expressed collective aspirations, and also addressed challenges. In doing so groups confronted difficult themes in the community such as privilege, diversity, despair, loneliness and isolation. The Go Deep Game emphasises both practical change in the neighbourhood whilst acting as a container for exploring division, beliefs and emotions, helping these to be processed and transformed. One aim of the game is to enable communities to renew their belief in themselves and what they can achieve by working together.
