'how do you deal with conflicts' and 'what happens after the Oasis is done?', some important questions we have received often in the last 7 years of applying the Oasis Game in various places around the world under the Elos Foundation.
In this blog we'd like to present one of the possible answers to this question, with the Go Deep Game. In the last 1,5 years Elos and a group of partners have developed a new process oriented tool, packaged in a game that is applicable in community settings and looks at deeper systemic questions.
This methodology is a deepening and a synthesis of 2 existing methodologies: The Oasis Game and Processwork. Process Work or Process Oriented Psychology is an approach to facilitating individuals, groups and organizations. Dr. Arnold Mindell, originally a physicist and Jungian psychologist, and always researcher at heart, developed methods of carefully following the twists and turns of nature – revealing the creative patterns that lie within apparently chaotic and disturbing events and symptoms.
By using the mobilization, creation and relationship power of the Oasis Game and adding elements of adressing deeper patterns and challenges that arise in groups and communities. Through bringing together these two practices we've created a playful, yet very profound way of adressing potential conflicts, such as tensions around diversity, power-dynamics, the lack of common vision or challenges of creating togetherness between different groups.
Go Deep Project is a European Project, to develop a new methodology to support leadership and facilitation with groups of young people. The project is granted through Erasmus+ and developed with various partners involved: Xena Centro Scambi e dinamiche interculturali (Itlay), Altekio (Spain), Comunitazione (Italy), Diversity Matters (Scotland, UK), Elos (Netherlands) and Elos (Brazil).
So how does it work?
The go deep game is not just your average game, it will be fun, but will also demand for you to do some work with yourself. It’s a journey out there, as well as in you.
In the GO-deep game is soon downloadable online and consists of a set of cards, a guide book and a participant journal that is set up in three phases.
Phase 1 is a preparation phase which you can already start from home by checking-in and preparing the journey via the go-deep platform.
With the group you’ll take some first steps together and in the community to come to an understanding which of the 6 paths to take in the main phase of the game and to take on a collective community challenge together. During the execution of one of the 'lines' the players of the game are asked to pick up cards with personal-, group- and community exercises which help to group to Go Deep into the topic while realizing a concrete result in and with the community. The lines are;
Go Deep and Oasis Game:
The first application of the game was in Grottaglie (Italy) in 2016 and resulted into a lot of transformations in the community and in our own development team. Check the video of the process on the Go deep section on the website. In our experience we see that the Go Deep Game has a strong value on it's own and has a strong value for the re-evolution phase during and after the Oasis Game.
On one side we created exciting, useful and fun ways to help youth workers and young people to learn together and to develop the skills they need to engage and transform communities.
And on the other side we created a tool that is an excellent opportunity to deal with the challenges that arise in re-evolution phases of the Oasis Game. The Oasis shakes up a lot and at times the new reality of empowered citizens clash with more traditional power structures who want to 'stay in charge' or some part of the community was not yet involved and with a great Oasis realized feels 'left out' and starts undermining the empowered citizens group... some examples of what can happen in the dynamics between people. We understand that adressing such issues can be difficult, but perhaps doing it together and doing it in a playful way takes us deeper and with that further...
